This project was part of the MSc elective course lighting design. Within a group of 3 students we have explored different applications of lighting design and gained the knowledge needed to create and build and evaluate lighting plans. This knowledge was applied in the process of designing and conceptualizing an interactive, multi-sensory, experience: the Dreamatorium.

CONCEPT

The Dreamatorium is an installation that could be part of an exhibition space. The installation consists of a hallway (entrance), a dome (the interactive experience) and a second hallway (the exit).

The experience is designed around the metaphor of sleeping and dreaming, each space embodies one of the sleep stages: falling asleep, REM & deep sleep stage and lastly awakening.

Within the dome the users are able to create their own imaginary landscapes: dreamscapes. By interacting with the space through a tangible interface users can explore the associations between material properties and visual elements that are created. The process of image generation is done through artificial intelligence such as with Generative Adversial Networks.

PROTOTYPING

LIGHTING DESIGN EXPLORATIONS

This project made it possible to explore a previously inaccessible to me topic: lighting design.

I have always been fascinated by lighting design and have experimented a lot with lighting effects, projections and visual illusions. During the course I was able to complement my interests with the needed expertise and knowledge of light as a design instrument.

Here you can see some explorations that I have conducted during the ideation phase of the Dreamatorium project.

Furthermore I have learned to create lighting simulations sketching for the purpose of lighting design.

Creating a 'flat' cube effect using simple a projection mapping

Exploring different textures, lenses and other ways of modifying light

Experimenting with projections and shadow play

Creating digital simulations to evaluate the concept
