Fake News Challenge was my bachelor graduation project from the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. The project was done in collaboration with multiple stakeholders: the research lab Future Libraries Lab and 13 Dutch libraries, including the Royal Library. The individual project took 3 months.

CONCEPT

Library of the future is not what many of us associate with a typical library, they organize diverse activities and workshops,  create meeting spaces and even have their own maker-spaces.

However, a potentially large target group seems to be unaware of these functions.

Young adults, or people between 18 and 30 years,  do not come to the library often and miss the chance to reshape their outdated image of the public library. Fake News Challenge is an interactive experience that is placed in the comfort zone of the young adults (at festivals) and shows them that the public library it is not as far from their lifestyle as they might think.

Through an interactive game the visitors get to learn not only to recognize fake news but also understand the intention behind it.

The exposure at the festivals, along with social media presence resulting from the use creates more recognition for the library in the eyes of the young adults.

When the visitors enter the experience they can scan a qr code to enter the game. Visitors are then divided into two teams: Resistance & Big Brother.

Separated teams enter the Fake News Challenge from different sides: inside and outside.

The physical set up of the space is modular, so the organizers of the festival can adjust the placement and amount of the hexagon structures according to their needs.

The 'Big Brother' panels consist of rotating disks that can be used to generate fake news titles. The structure of the title always consists of a name, an action and a topic. This ensures a balance between the creative process and the time boundaries of the game.

On the inside the 'Resistance' team is able to learn more about the structure of fake news and the intentions behind it. When the time is up they get to decipher the fake news title made by the 'Big Brother' team.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

The biggest challenge of this project was the fact that it happened during the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic. It was a very uncertain time and it certainly made activities such as co-creating and user testing a lot more challenging.

It was also difficult to collect more general data & to find professionals in the fields of festival organization. However, I navigated these challenges by utilizing my personal connections and networks and thinking outside of the box when it came to my user test set ups.

I did a lot of co-creation with my housemates and user tested with them. I also found professionals online to interview and contacted local festival organizers to ask about more practical aspects of the design. Furthermore I sent out an online survey to collect general data.
